Tönet, ihr Pauken
Conducted by Shunske Sato, the choir and orchestra of the Nederlandse Bachvereniging present a festive programme of works by Bach, his distant predecessor Hans Leo Hassler and contemporary Georg Philipp Telemann.
The beautiful song Mein G'mut ist mir verwirret by Hassler attracted the attention of several composers, including Bach. The latter incorporated it into his Matthäus Passion in a very recognisable way. Because of the more than two hundred church cantatas that have been preserved, Bach is sometimes called 'the fifth evangelist'. He also created a number of secular cantatas, sometimes with a frivolous and comical subject. From this enormous legacy, the Nederlandse Bachvereniging has put two cantatas on the programme, alternating with parts from his well-known orchestral suites.
