Beethoven 6

Programme

  • Frederick Delius On hearing the first cuckoo in spring
  • Claude Debussy Rhapsody for clarinet and orchestra
  • Michael Tippett Ritual dances from The midsummer marriage
  • Ludwig van Beethoven Sixth symphony 'Pastorale'

For this concert, the renowned English conductor Sir Mark Elder is once again a guest of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. The maestro has a portion of British beauty in store especially for the occasion. Like the most popular piece by the subtle poet Frederick Delius, On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring, a colourful meditation on a Norwegian folk song by his good friend Edvard Grieg. But also Ritual Dances from the opera The Midsummer Marriage by Michael Tippett. In addition, music by Claude Debussy. His Rhapsody is not a virtuoso concert piece. The soloist is more of an extension of the orchestra, with the clarinet (in Debussy's words) 'muttering melancholic phrases'. To finish, Beethoven's contemplative 'Pastoral' symphony, inspired by forests and mountains.
