Elgar and Mendelssohn

Programme

  • Thomas Adès Three studies from Couperin
  • Edward Elgar Cello Concerto
  • Felix Mendelssohn Third symphony 'Scottish'

Edward Elgar wrote his Cello Concerto in 1918-19 with the horrors of the First World War in mind. It was his last major work; when his wife died a few months after the premiere in London, which Elgar himself conducted, he stopped composing. The drama of the work has been made famous in particular by cellist Jacqueline du Pré, who has performed the work many times and also recorded it twice on CD. As a young composer, Felix Mendelssohn made a number of journeys through Europe. The Scottish landscape inspired him so much that he dedicated several works to it, including his extensive Third Symphony.
