Concerts in the Broadcasting Music Centre
Chamber music (2) - Wittgenstein Project: chamber music with piano à une main
Programme
- Josef Labor Trio for clarinet, viola and piano left hand
- Erich W. Korngold Suite for 2 violins, cello and piano left hand
The namesake of this ensemble - the Austrian-American composer and pianist Paul Wittgenstein - was hit by a sniper on the Eastern Front during World War I and lost his right arm. This did not prevent him from continuing his career as a pianist afterwards. Numerous compositions were dedicated to Wittgenstein, including Ravel's Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. There is also a great deal of chamber music written for him by Josef Labor and Erich Wolfgang Korngold, among others, which shows how rich and full it can be with a one-handed piano part.
