Classical Top 400: Dvoráks From the New World

Programme

  • Johan Wagenaar Overture The Tamed Shrew
  • Antonín Dvořák Ninth symphony 'From the New World'

Every year high in the Classical Top 400: Dvořák's Ninth Symphony 'From the New World'. Sander Teepen will also conduct a playful overture by Wagenaar with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.

Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 'From the New World'
For three years, Czech composer Dvořák was director of the New York National Conservatory. His goal was to discover American music and contribute to a national sound. Dvořák threw himself into it with passion. He studied the music of native Americans, travelled extensively and met Americans of all origins. His pupil Stanley Burleigh taught him spirituals, which he himself had learned from his grandfather. All these impressions found their way into Dvořák's Ninth Symphony. In the end, he also found his own home in the middle of this new world. Dvořák completed his masterpiece in the mainly Czech community of Spilville. In 2020, it reached fifth place in the Classical Top 400. How high will the work go this year?

Sander Teepen conducts Radio Philharmonic Orchestra
'I never force myself when I conduct, I prefer to invite', said conductor Sander Teepen in Brabants Dagblad. Besides Dvorák, he will also conduct a stimulating work by Johan Wagenaar today: the Overture 'The Tamed Shrew'. Based on Shakespeare's comedy of the same name, Wagenaar tells a light-hearted and playful musical story. The young Katherina is a little too mouthy for her future Petruchio's liking. This jerk does everything in his power to 'tame' her, but does it work?
