Live on NPO Radio 4: Maria Milstein plays Bruch

Programme

  • Alphons Diepenbrock Overture from The birds
  • Max Bruch First violin concerto
  • Ludwig van Beethoven Fourth symphony

This concert will be held as a concert without an audience and can be heard live on NPO Radio 4. Ticket buyers will be informed as soon as possible about the consequences of this alternative setup via e-mail, which will also contain the possibilities for refunds. You can also watch the concert as a webcast via www.nporadio4.nl/live.

Unfortunately, conductor Edo de Waart has to cancel this concert due to personal circumstances. We have found Otto Tausk to take over this programme. For this reason, R. Strauss' Alpine Symphony has unfortunately been cancelled.

How appropriate can a piece of music from times long past be today? Alphons Diepenbrock wrote De Vogels in self-isolation in Laren in 1917. Although the Netherlands was protected from war suffering, Diepenbrock was so affected by all the miserable news from surrounding countries that he fell into a depression and withdrew to his summer house in Laren. There, surrounded by forest birds that did not know about war and violence, he wrote a tribute to garden warblers, tree larks and other twittering flutterers. Cheerful, sparkling music that enlightened his spirit and that of others. Next comes Max Bruch. His best and most famous violin concerto begins like a Vorspiel from a romantic opera. What follows is serious, compelling and tranquil. The Radio Philharmonic Orchestra closes this adapted programme by playing Beethoven's Fourth Symphony, which is not by chance his most lively, optimistic and cheerful, like a winter sun that unexpectedly shows itself between grey clouds.
