On Christmas Day of the year 1734, a large crowd of churchgoers is packed into the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. Impressive timpani beats reverberate through the space. Flutes and oboes drop in, followed by blaring trumpets and swirling strings. This is how Bach's Weihnachts-Oratorium begins. The Nederlandse Bachvereniging brings this jubilation about the birth of Jesus to listeners of the AVROTROS Friday Concert.
