Programme

  • Torri La vanità del mondo

More than three hundred years after its Brussels premiere, Andrea Marcon is presenting Italian Pietro Torri 's La vanità del mondofor the first time in Amsterdam. And we have missed something Northern Dutch premiere after more than three hundred years When the last governor of the Spanish Netherlands, Maximilian Emanuel of Bavaria, took up residence in Brussels around 1700, musical life flourished there. The Italian Pietro Torri had travelled with him as chamber organist, but was soon promoted to master of chamber music and court chapel master. Twenty years later, Torri got his dream job: director' at the Munich court chapel. At the crossroads between two centuries, Torri's music is a successful marriage of the Venetian multi-choir style and a more modern writing à la Scarlatti. Remarkable is the corpus of oratorios that Torri wrote together: the most substantial contribution to the genre from the period before Handel! The oratorio La vanità del mondo (1706), more than three hundred years after its first performance in Brussels, now has its Dutch premiere. Andrea Marcon brings old drama to life In this production, Andrea Marcon, one of the most renowned baroque conductors of the moment, unleashes the dramatic power of Torri's score and lets the beautiful arias reverberate like the old days.
