Musical portrait of a turbulent musical world
The Calefax Reed Quintet presents a musical portrait of troubled Europe in the 10s, 20s and 30s of the 20th century. A time of great change, industrial revolution and a burgeoning middle class claiming its place in politics, art and culture. Travel became increasingly easy and cultures began to influence each other worldwide. A range of musical smells and colors spread across Europe. Calefax turns the spotlight on some striking composers in this time frame and, as we have come to expect from these reed players, makes use of their own arrangements for the instrumentation oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bass clarinet and bassoon. The result is a program that echoes a stirring world of music, virtuosically performed and attractively presented.
