Ein deutsches Requiem

Programme

  • Alphons Diepenbrock Suite Elektra
  • Johannes Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem

With Johannes Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem, the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, along with the choir and soloists, offers a warm embrace. In addition, the German composer's notes are an adventure in themselves. For over an hour, Brahms drags you along from one vocal jewel to the next, not to let go even after the last note.

Johannes Brahms' career really took off after the successful performance of his complete Ein deutsches Requiem in 1868. The work with texts from the Bible in the German language is not a mass for the dead. It is a mass for the living. Brahms believed that it is not the dead but the bereaved who need care and comfort. They get plenty of that with these wonderfully embracing notes.

With the experienced German baritone Michael Nagy and the rising young Irish soprano Sarah Brady, the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra has two soloists in house who add value to Brahms' work. Brady's young clear voice contrasts tellingly with Nagy's deep baritone. The Groot Omroepkoor guarantees the cherishing choral passages.
