A new spring, a new sound'. The NTR ZaterdagMatinee presents the latest work by Louis Andriessen. A perfect programme, with Mozart's Fortieth Symphonyand an in memoriam by Josquin des Prez.
A slightly belated Louis Andriessen premiere
The latest work by the Nestor of Dutch composed music Louis Andriessen (*1939) was to have its premiere at the 2020 Holland Festival. The anti-coronation measures prevented that concert. However, with financial support from Cappella Amsterdam, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century and the Friends of the Matinee, the NTR Saturday Matinee is able to organise an extra concert. So you can still become acquainted with the latest work by Andriessen, for which Gorters Mei served as a source of inspiration. A new spring and a new sound...' is how Herman Gorter's famous poem Mei begins . The now 81-year-old composer Louis Andriessen was inspired by the poem to write a new composition for choir and orchestra. The piece is a tribute to his bosom friend, the recorder player and conductor Frans Brüggen (1934-2014).
Mozart and Josquin des Prez
The relationship with Mozart's penultimate symphony - one of Brüggen's 'body of work' - is beautiful. Tragedy, operatic drama, the loving work of a 'pop musician avant la lettre': Mozart's career compressed into one symphony. Nymphes des bois, which Josquin des Prez wrote for his colleague Johannes Ockeghem, who died in 1497, fits seamlessly into this programme.
