For some time now, Philharmonie Zuidnederland has had a happy partnership with a cellist who also conducts: Mario Brunello. In 1986 he was the first Italian to win the famous Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. After Fauré's beautifully reverent Elégie for cello and orchestra, Brunello will solo in the best-known of Camille Sainst-Saëns' three cello concertos, which is both romantic and gallant. In the last work on this programme, the Suite No. 4 'Mozartiana', Tchaikovsky pays homage to his favourite composer Mozart.
