Steve Reich, Bryce Dessner and new works by Aart Strootman and Jonny Greenwood, stylistically transgressing ... André de Ridder conducts the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.

Ritual for violin and 68 strings

Alternative pop/rock and modern classical music have increasingly converged. Actually, this already began with the minimal music of Steve Reich and his kindred spirits, in the 1960s. Guitarist and composer Aart Strootman signs on to perform Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint, composed in the late 1980s. From Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood goes the overwhelming composition Horror vacui. It is an almost ritualistic-looking piece for violin and 68 strings, giving the musicians a lot more to do than bow. This is music for the ears and the eyes, obviously with the dark undertones you might expect from a Radiohead head.

Pop, minimal, folk, baroque, avant-garde

Bryce Dessner also draws from a large musical pond. In addition to being a rock guitarist, he is a composer of multi-style pieces. He combines pop influences and, for an American, almost obvious hints of minimal music with folk, touches of baroque and avant-garde. A fine example is Garcia Counterpoint, in which Aart Strootman solos on electric guitar. Strootman, well versed in experimental pop and minimal music, will also bring his own work, specially commissioned for the ZaterdagMatinee and the Radio Philharmonic.
