A recital focusing on German song. Baritone Thomas Oliemans sings songs by Schubert and Wolf. At the piano Hannes Minnaar, who also plays some piano works by Schubert and Bartók.
Franz Schubert
"Dort, wo du nicht bist, dort ist das Glück," the famous words of German poet Georg Philipp Schmidt from his poem Des Fremdlings Abendlied. It could be the motto of the wanderer who constantly moves on and seeks his happiness beyond the horizon. Schubert inimitably set this song to music as Der Wanderer. It can be heard in this concert along with several other songs of his in the interpretation of Thomas Oliemans. A singer who is highly appreciated not only on the large opera stage but also in the intimacy of song, which ranges from classical to French chansons.
Hugo Wolf
Baritone Thomas Oliemans is accompanied by artist in residence of the AVROTROS Friday Concert: Hannes Minnaar. He also performs as soloist in Schubert's virtuoso but intense Wanderer-Fantasie, which the composer created based on his famous song. Furthermore, he can be heard in Bartók's suite for piano In the open air, five short pieces that sketch Hungarian country life.
Singer and pianist conclude the program with a selection from the songs created by Hugo Wolf on lyrics by Eduard Mörike. In a flurry of compositional fervor in 1888, Wolf set 53 of Mörike's poems to music. Brilliant miniatures in which he transforms all the emotions of Mörike's poetry into music, not only in the singing voice but also in the piano, forming a splendid duality.
