Remembering with Berlioz
Programme
- Matthew Whittall These things remain (Dutch premiere)
- Franz Schubert Eighth symphony 'Unvollendete'
- Hector Berlioz Messe solennelle
As part of the National Commemoration two days earlier, this concert opens with the world premiere of These Things Remain for orchestra, chorus and baritone by Canadian composer Matthew Whittall, based on poems written by Canadian soldiers during the war in Europe. Next comes Franz Schubert's most played and best-known symphony, "The Unfinished" from 1822 with only two movements. Did Schubert himself consider the work so complete? It seems so. The last work is a "solemn mass" that Hector Berlioz wrote when he was 20, but largely tore up afterwards. Until a Belgian teacher recovered a copy of the complete work at an organ gallery in Antwerp in 1991!
