Karina Canellakis conducts The Bells of Rachmaninov

Programme

  • Jean Sibelius En saga
  • Sergei Rachmaninov The bells

In the great choral symphony The Bells, Rachmaninov uses church bells to sound important moments in life: from golden wedding bells to leaden death bells. An impressive opening of the season with the house ensembles of The Sunday Morning Concert, the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and the Groot Omroepkoor, conducted by Karina Canellakis.

The Bells of Rachmaninov
With The Bells, Rachmaninov proves that he is much more than a piano composer. In this imposing choral symphony with rich harmonies and full orchestration, Rachmaninov is at his best. He makes all the important moments in life ring through church bells: from golden wedding bells to the leaden, lugubrious death bell.

Karina Canellakis
Since 2019, Karina Canellakis has been chief conductor of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the house orchestra of The Sunday Morning Concert. She is the first female principal conductor of a Dutch orchestra. Her career took off when she stepped in at the last minute for Jaap van Zweden at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in 2014: without rehearsal, she conducted Shostakovich's doggedly difficult Eighth Symphony with great success. Since then, no one can ignore her and she was also appointed permanent guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, among others.
