The Christmas tradition, including Christmas tree and Silent Night, is largely rooted in the centuries-old German fondness for this joyous celebration. On the day before Christmas, Vox Luminis comes with a wonderful German Christmas program.

Heinrich Schütz' Christmas Story.
Central to the program is the colorful Christmas story of Heinrich Schütz, the grandmaster of the German early Baroque, who died 350 years ago. He learned the trade in Venice, but brilliantly turned the new Italian style to German. His Weihnachtshistorie covers everything: the stable, the star, the angels, the shepherds and the Wise Men from the East.

Eighteen-part beauty
In addition, the internationally acclaimed ensemble led by Lionel Meunier will perform several German Christmas motets by Schütz and by his slightly younger contemporary Andreas Hammerschmidt. The shining peak on the Christmas tree is the impressive, eighteen-voice Magnificat by Johann Rosenmüller, who, like Schütz, had learned from the color magicians in Venice.
