Elena Schwarz conducts the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in a program of orchestral magic of the highest order, concluding with Debussy's irresistible La mer.
Masters of color and atmosphere
With the highly evocative "seascape" La mer, Debussy added new dimensions to the orchestral palette in 1905. Not understood at the time, it has iconic status today. In America at the same time, the completely unique Charles Ives was experimenting, resulting in such hallucinatory orchestral works as Central Park in the Dark. An equally surprising, "cosmic" palette can be found with color and atmosphere master Henri Dutilleux, whose Mystère de l'instant sounds like an enchanting improvisation for a surprising set of instruments.
Spectacular and current
French-American Daniel Wohl, this season's composer in residence at the NTR Saturday Matinee, delivers the most extreme work. His Uncanny Valley is a primal, spectacular piece for varied percussion, electronics and orchestra. The theme is highly topical: is artificial intelligence becoming a threat to our daily lives? Or is it an enrichment? The soloist is percussionist DOMNIQ (Dominique Vleeshouwers), who has already performed successfully at the Matinee in 2024.
