Lucas & Arthur Jussen as guests of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra

Programme

  • Joey Roukens In unison
  • Leoš Janáček Sinfonietta

Playing together, you are 'one being', Arthur and Lucas Jussen were quoted as saying in Het Parool. This idea is at the forefront in Joey Roukens' continually surprising In Unison. Karina Canellakis and her Radio Philharmonic also perform Janáček's exciting Sinfonietta.

Lucas & Arthur Jussen
The Dutch newspaper Trouw wrote about Lucas and Arthur Jussen. All over the world, the brothers are among the most loved pianists of their generation. Recently The Russian Album was released, but today the Jussens play homegrown work. Joey Roukens wrote In Unison for them. At this stage, their playing has a young-at-heart feel to it. I put that in it so that they can release their energy,' he said in an interview. In Unison offers three parts long surprises that, according to the Volkskrant, evoke many 'oh's and ah's' from the audience. Whimsical, ethereal and virtuoso, the two pianists move in front of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.

Janáček
Karina Canellakis is working with her Radio Philharmonic Orchestra on a cycle of operas by Janáček. Today, however, she chooses the exciting Sinfonietta. Janáček created this piece for a nationalistic gymnastics festival. The nationalistic aspect was at least as important as the sporting one. At the time, there was a struggle for independence from the 'Danube Monarchy' between Austria and Hungary. The Czech Janáček took his city Brno as the starting point for an orchestral work full of spectacle. In particular, he wanted the wind instruments to sound like a military band: tough, and reaching for miles.
