NNO plays Skrjabin and Franck

Programme

  • Léon Orthel Tre movimenti ostinati
  • Alexander Skrjabin Piano Concerto
  • César Franck Symphony

The Noord Nederlands Orkest opens with music by Léon Orthel (1905-1985), dedicated to conductor Willem van Otterloo, and continues with the much under-performed Piano Concerto by Russian Alexander Skrjabin. It was one of Sergei Rachmaninov's favourites, who conducted a performance with Skrjabin himself on the grand piano. The concerto was written in 1896, when Skrjabin returned from a concert tour to Amsterdam, The Hague and Rome, among other places. The work is full of nostalgic reflections on Chopin's sound world. It will be followed by the 'organ-playing' Symphony in just three movements by the Belgian-French composer César Franck, a fascinating masterpiece from his astonishingly productive final years and conceived as a large, coherent cycle.
