Peer Gynt and the Fifth by Sibelius

Programme

  • Edvard Grieg Peer Gynt: Suite no.2 op.55
  • Edward Elgar Cello Concerto
  • Jean Sibelius Fifth symphony

Cellist Anastasia Kobekina devotes herself wholeheartedly to the moving Cello Concerto by British composer Edward Elgar. It is one of the favorite works of the artist in residence at TivoliVredenburg about whom the Volkskrant wrote: "She plays expressively squared, but bypasses sentiment.

Melancholy and energetic
Elgar was at the peak of his powers when he completed his Cello Concerto in the aftermath of World War I. It is an epic monument full of melancholy, but also an energetic, uplifting work. The feat was by no means to be missed on the program of acclaimed Russian cellist Anastasia Kobekina during her residency in Utrecht.

Liberating light
Sibelius' Fifth Symphony is also loved by a wide audience. Sibelius wrote the work at the beginning of the First World War. In the final imposing movement, Sibelius depicts the heavenly flight of a group of swans, reaching for the liberating light. Conductor Dalia Stasevska knows the finer points of this like no other. The artistic director of the International Sibelius Festival has emerged as a true Finland specialist.
