Pieces of Tomorrow - Mahler 6
Programme
- Gustav Mahler Sixth symphony
In the, for many now familiar, casual atmosphere of Pieces of Tomorrow this evening, a masterpiece by Gustav Mahler, performed by the full Radio Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by principal conductor Karina Canellakis. With a brief introduction, no dress code and any beverage may be brought in. DJ St. Paul is your host, visuals support the story and the rest is entirely up to the music itself.
Gustav Mahler himself found his Sixth Symphony difficult to conduct. The work had to mature in the ears of conductors, orchestras and listeners, mainly because of its scale and tragedy. For eighty minutes, fear and doubt loom large. But the master of contrast also has cowbells ringing in an Alpine valley and a xylophone in a haunting scherzo. The Andante is mild and rural, quoting from Mahler's Kindertotenlieder. The long last movement contains terrifying sledgehammer blows of fate.
