Portrait of Patricia Kopatchinskaya

Programme

  • Béla Bartók Four pieces for orchestra opus 12
  • Francisco Coll Violin Concerto (Dutch premiere)
  • Antonín Dvořák Seventh symphony

"I am not interested in the violin. I am not really a violinist" - says Patricia Kopatchinskaja. The Spaniard Francisco Coll wrote a beautiful violin concerto for her - inspired by this.

Kopatchinskaja plays new violin concerto
After the fall of the Soviet Union, Patricia Kopatchinskaja from Moldova moved to Vienna. There she played wherever she could and composed in the tram. In the meantime, she has become an international star who stands out in stage appearance and choice of repertoire. The New York Times headlines: "Wild child of classical violin". The Spanish composer and painter Francisco Coll (*1985) calls his new Violin Concerto, that has its Dutch premiere here - postponed by corona - a 'portrait' of Kopatchinskaja.

Karina Canellakis conducts Bartók and Dvořák
Béla Bartók was only 31 when he wrote his Four Orchestral Pieces in a version for two pianos. He waited nine years to orchestrate them, and that decision unfortunately put a damper on interest in a brilliant 'youth' work. Antonín Dvořák's Seventh Symphony was commissioned by the London Philharmonic Society, his first major international challenge. From a deeply tragic beginning in D minor, Dvořák works towards a radiant finale in D major.
