This concert opens with the most moving passages in the entire opera literature: the introduction to the first act and Isoldes 'Liebestod' from Wagner's scorching love drama Tristan und Isolde. This is followed by the Dutch premiere of the Third Violin Concerto 'Ich und Du' by the leading post-war Russian composer Sofia Gubaidoelina, since the fall of the Wall a lauded composer especially in the West and a welcome guest in the AVROTROS Friday Concert. Finally, Rachmaninov's Third Symphony, considered his most Russian.
