Valentine's concert with Maria Warenberg & Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet
Programme
- Gustav Mahler Selection from Des Knaben Wunderhorn
- Sergei Prokofiev Suite from Romeo and Juliet
The morning after Valentine's Day, Maria Warenberg sings of nature, longing, farewell, but above all love, in Mahler's orchestral songs. Which is proverbial in Shakespeare's iconic love drama Romeo and Juliet, Prokofiev's inspiration for quite a few of the most beautiful notes he composed.
Valentine's Concert
In this Valentine's concert, of course, the focus is on love. In his orchestral songs to Des Knaben Wunderhorn, Mahler used anonymous German folk song lyrics to express nature, longing, farewell, but above all, love. And whoever says "love" quickly thinks of Shakespeare's love drama Romeo and Juliet. The forbidden but oh so intense love between two descendants of rival sexes inspired Prokofiev to create music in which every emotion is palpable, from agony to anger to intense drama. But of course the most beautiful notes sound where love is involved.
Maria Warenberg
In 2023, mezzo-soprano Maria Warenberg became the first Dutchwoman in years to reach a final place at the Queen Elisabeth Competition. After that, her career took off. She is now part of the soloist ensemble of the Opéra national de Paris, one of the world's leading opera houses. Carried by the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, she performs a starring role in Mahler's wonderful orchestral songs.
