Wagner and Rachmaninov conducted by Slobodeniouk

Programme

  • Richard Wagner from Tristan und Isolde: Vorspiel und Liebestod
  • Sergei Rachmaninov Third symphony

Rachmaninov's Symphony No. 3
Almost three decades passed between Rachmaninov's Second and Third Symphonies. During that time, he was extremely busy as a concert pianist. His friend Leopold Stokowski, who conducted the Philadelphia Orchestra, nevertheless allowed him to be tempted by a commission. The sumptuous Third Symphony sets the orchestra to work to the last man, with beautiful roles for harp, percussion and celesta. Melancholy and exuberance in a late-Romantic masterpiece.

Dima Slobodeniouk conducts Wagner
The Radio Philharmonic Orchestra is today led by their beloved guest conductor Dima Slobodeniouk. This Finnish/Russian maestro is renowned for his Wagner interpretations. Today he has chosen the intense Vorspiel und Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde. Wagner, who incidentally lived a stone's throw away from the Swiss house where Rachmaninov would settle in the thirties, called the piece a memorial to love. The most beautiful of all dreams'.
