William Christie: exuberant baroque by two childhood friends
Programme
- Georg Philipp Telemann Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu
- Georg Friedrich Handel Zadok the priest
- Georg Friedrich Handel Te Deum 'Queen Caroline'
- Georg Friedrich Handel The King shall rejoice
After the high-profile discoveries of Der Tag des Gerichts and the opera Orpheus, another great work by Georg Philipp Telemann is on the programme: Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu.
Telemann stayed young
The rarely heard oratorio Die Auferstehung about the resurrection and ascension of Jesus is one of Telemann's last great works. He was almost eighty years old when he wrote it, but there is no looking back. We hear a composer who is completely up to date; here and there, the language of Haydn and Mozart is already emerging.
William Christie explores further
The programme also includes a Te Deum and two festive coronation anthems by Telemann's childhood friend Georg Friedrich Handel. Handel wrote the anthems for George II's accession to the throne, but they have been used at almost every coronation since. All this is right up the alley of Les Arts Florissants and their leader William Christie, who, like Telemann, is by no means resting on his laurels, but is continually exploring new avenues.
