Sam Weller

Sam Weller is a conductor based in Sydney and Amsterdam, dedicated to sharing his passion for orchestral music with the rest of the world.

Recently, Sam was announced as one of six "designated winners" of the International Conducting Competition Rotterdam, with which he will conduct such ensembles as the Rotterdam Philharmonic, Klangforum Wien and Orchestra of the 18th Century in 2025.

Sam has a thriving freelance career in the Netherlands and Australia. He recently debuted with the Noord Nederlands Orkest, PHION, Canberra Symphony Orchestra and made his Dutch opera debut with a national tour of Mozart's Zauberflöte. Sam's upcoming performances include operas with the National Opera Academy and symphonic concerts with the North Netherlands Orchestra, Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Phil Zuid and Residentie Orkest, as well as the Queensland, Tasmanian and West Australian Symphony Orchestras. Sam is also a guest teacher and conductor at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the Royal Conservatoire - The Hague.

In 2016, Sam founded Ensemble Apex, which is considered "one of the most exciting new ensembles in Sydney" (Limelight Magazine). The ensemble creates exceptional orchestral music experiences for newcomers and seasoned concertgoers alike. Apex has had sold-out seasons to its credit since 2016, with highlights including Bela Bartok's Miraculous Mandarin at Sydney Town Hall, Rhapsody in Blue with Simon Tedeschi, Strauss' Eine Alpensinfonie and most recently a critically acclaimed production of Verdi's Messa da Requiem that was awarded in the Australian Book Review as one of the most exciting performances of 2023. In 2024, with support from the Australian government, they are launching the Apex Festival - a groundbreaking new orchestral music festival in Australia.

In 2022 Sam graduated from the prestigious National Master Orchestra Conducting in the Netherlands where he studied with Ed Spanjaard, Jac Van Steen, Kenneth Montgomery OBE and guest teacher Antony Hermus. Through his involvement with the NMO, Sam has conducted many professional orchestras in the Netherlands including; Het Nederlands Philharmonisch, Noord Nederlands Orkest, Residentie Orkset (The Hague Philharmonic), Nederlands Kamerorkest, Philharmonie Zuid Nederlands, Het Ballet Orkest, Sinfonia Rotterdam and has worked with the singers of De Nationale Opera Academie.
