Komische Oper Berlin has announced the appointment of James Gaffigan as chief conductor on 4 January. James Gaffigan, permanent guest conductor of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, succeeds Ainārs Rubiķis in this position and will start at Komische Oper Berlin in the 2023/24 season. He will combine this position with his chief conducting position at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia.

James Gaffigan's appointment is for a period of four years, until the summer of 2027. During this period, the building of the Komische Oper Berlin will undergo extensive renovation and Gaffigan will appear in various productions in other locations around Berlin.
