Lamsma/Vänskä: dream duo in Nielsen's Violin Concerto

Programme

  • Donghoon Shin Upon his ghostly solitude (Dutch premiere)
  • Carl Nielsen Violin Concerto
  • Johannes Brahms Third symphony

North German Brahms and Nielsen from Denmark, plus South Korean Donghoon Shin. The worlds come together beautifully in this program featuring the Finn Osmo Vänskä and the Dutch Simone Lamsma.

Sources of inspiration? From Brahms to Led Zeppelin
Thanks to Osmo Vänskä, the Matina audience was introduced to many a new composing talent. At this concert, it is South Korean Donghoon Shin, who has lived in London since 2014 and took master classes with this season's Matinee composer, Unsuk Chin. From him, Vänskä presents a new work commissioned by the orchestras of Los Angeles, Bamberg and Seoul. Shin is a musical omnivore who finds inspiration from both Brahms and Led Zeppelin. Such striking titles as Kafka's Dream and Of Rats and Men illustrate his fascination with literature and film.

Simone Lamsma plays Nielsen's Violin Concerto
Simone Lamsma chooses her repertoire with a sense of adventure. Previously, she could be heard at the Matinee in concerts by Mathilde Wantenaar and Sofia Gubaidoelina, for example. For the collaboration with Vänskä, Carl Nielsen is a dreamed choice. And then Brahms sounds. In seven fat years, between 1877 and 1885, he composed one masterpiece after another: the Second, Third and Fourth Symphonies, the Violin Concerto and the Second Piano Concerto. No tone poet added comparable musical richness to the great symphonic repertoire in such a short time.
