AVROTROS Friday concert with the Storioni Trio

Programme

  • Ludwig van Beethoven Second Symphony
  • Daníel Bjarnason White flags
  • Bedřich Smetana Trio

The AVROTROS Friday concert on 22 January 2021 will unfortunately be without an audience due to the measures surrounding the coronavirus. The concert can be heard live on NPO Radio 4 from 20:15 onwards. After the concert by the Storioni Trio, a recording of the concert from 15 January 2016 will be broadcast, where the Nationaal Jeugdorkest played works by Joey Roukens and Hector Berlioz, with the cooperation of violinist Isabelle van Keulen.

A whole orchestra (Nationaal Jeugdorkest, which was to play today together with the Storioni Trio) on stage with orchestra members from all provinces, that's not going to work. And yet, with a little imagination, there is an orchestra on stage today, be it a mini or pocket orchestra. The Storioni Trio is doing something that was extremely popular two centuries ago and is a godsend today: performing a symphony in an arrangement for chamber music ensemble. Beethoven himself arranged his good-humoured Second Symphony for piano trio. Smart, because in this way, many more people could become acquainted with his music at home and, in passing, he earned a good living by selling piano excerpts from larger works. Smetana's piano trio is for the strength of piano, violin and cello. The composer expressed his emotions after the death of his youngest daughter: mourning and happy memories alternate. The White Flags by Daníel Bjarnason depict the faded American flags on the moon, stripped of their colour and meaning by time, UV light and extreme temperature changes. Talking about symbolism.
