The Christmas story from Luke 2:1-21 and Bach's musical rendition of it in Bach's Weihnachts-Oratorium form the backbone of this programme. Most of Bach's arias and tutti parts have been replaced by music by other composers. This creates a Christmas pastiche in which the storyline has remained intact. The programme concludes with Bach's cantata Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, BWV 61; an Advent cantata from Bach's time in Weimar that fits in nicely with the predominantly seventeenth-century atmosphere in the rest of the programme.
